Sales Tax Policy
Clear, honest pricing is part of how we do business. Here's exactly how Pennsylvania sales tax applies to your trailer purchase at any Best Choice Trailers location — no surprises at the counter.
Understanding Sales Tax on Your Trailer Purchase
When you buy a trailer from Best Choice Trailers, Pennsylvania sales tax is calculated and collected the same way it would be for any titled vehicle purchase in the state. We handle the tax calculation for you at the time of sale so the number on your paperwork matches what you actually owe — no rounding games, no hidden add-ons.
This page explains how sales tax is figured on new and used trailers, what happens if you're registering out of state, and what documentation to bring with you so your purchase goes smoothly. If anything here doesn't match your specific situation, our sales team at any of our four locations will walk you through it before you sign.
The Short Version
Pennsylvania charges 6% state sales tax on trailer purchases, calculated on the final purchase price after any trade-in credit. Trailers registered and titled outside Pennsylvania may be handled differently depending on your home state's rules — our team will confirm the correct amount before you sign anything.
How Sales Tax Is Calculated
Pennsylvania's base sales tax rate is 6% of the purchase price. Two of our neighboring PA counties charge a small local add-on, but none of our four dealership locations fall inside those zones, so every Best Choice Trailers location charges the standard state rate.
| Dealership Location | County | Sales Tax Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Carlisle, PA | Cumberland County | 6% |
| Irwin, PA | Westmoreland County | 6% |
| Evans City, PA | Butler County | 6% |
| West Middlesex, PA | Mercer County | 6% |
Rates shown reflect current Pennsylvania Department of Revenue guidance at the time of publishing and are subject to change by the state. Your final invoice will always reflect the rate in effect on your purchase date.
Sales tax is applied to the agreed purchase price of the trailer after any trade-in allowance is subtracted, and before financing charges, since finance charges themselves are not taxable in Pennsylvania. Optional add-ons purchased at the same time — spare tire kits, brake upgrades, ramps, tie-downs — are taxed as part of the sale.
Tax-Exempt & Out-of-State Purchases
We regularly sell to customers who live outside Pennsylvania or who plan to register a trailer for business or agricultural use. A few situations that come up often:
Out-of-State Buyers
If you'll be titling and registering your trailer in a state other than Pennsylvania, tax handling can vary based on that state's reciprocity rules. Bring proof of your out-of-state residency and intended registration state, and our team will confirm exactly how tax applies to your purchase.
Agricultural & Business Exemptions
Certain farm and business use trailers may qualify for a PA sales tax exemption with the proper exemption certificate on file. If you believe your purchase qualifies, bring your completed exemption paperwork with you — our office can review it, but we recommend confirming exemption eligibility with your accountant or the PA Department of Revenue beforehand.
We're Not a Substitute for Tax Advice
Our team is well versed in how sales tax applies to everyday trailer purchases, but we are not accountants or tax attorneys. For exemption eligibility or multi-state registration questions specific to your situation, we recommend confirming details with a licensed tax professional or your state's Department of Revenue in addition to speaking with our sales staff.
What You'll Need at Time of Purchase
Valid Photo ID
A state-issued driver's license or ID for every buyer listed on the title.
Proof of Residency
Needed to confirm which state's tax and registration rules apply to your purchase.
Exemption Certificate
If applicable — completed and signed ahead of time speeds up your paperwork.
Trade-In Title
Bring your clean, signed-over title if you're applying a trade-in credit toward tax.
Financing & Sales Tax
Sales tax is due at the time of purchase regardless of how you're paying. If you're financing through Best Choice Trailers' lending partners, tax and title fees are typically rolled into your total loan amount rather than paid separately out of pocket — ask your sales consultant to show you the full breakdown before you sign so you know exactly what's financed versus what's paid up front.
